Dr. Copland Harris Rose is a trombonist, freelance musician, music educator, and composer currently based in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Copland completed Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees at the University of Arizona. His doctoral project features the original composition of mixed-instrument duets with trombone and emphasizes the importance of promoting collaborative musicianship in trombone pedagogy.
Copland has performed with ensembles such as the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Century Jazz Orchestra, and Kansas City Chamber Orchestra. In 2025, he performed as a trombonist in the orchestra for the Lone Tree Arts Center’s production of Nice Work if You Can Get It, which became the winner of Colorado Theatre Guild’s Henry Award for the Most Outstanding production of a musical.
Copland’s experience as a teacher has granted him the privilege of leading a private studio that has moved with him throughout the United States. In 2026, he was the featured guest artist and clinician at the inaugural Sterling Trombone Festival in Colorado. In 2024, he was a coaching fellow and brass quintet fellow in the Tucson Brass Workshop. Additionally, Copland was a trombone coach for the Tucson New Horizons Band in 2025.
In 2024, Copland was selected to participate in the Gene Pokorny Low Brass Seminar in DeKalb, IL. In 2021, he was invited to participate in the Santa Fe Trombone Summit in New Mexico. Additionally, Copland is a four-time participant in the Becker Low Brass Boot Camp. In 2017, he was selected to perform in the National Intercollegiate Band hosted by Kappa Kappa Psi-Tau Beta Sigma in Orlando, FL at their biennial convention. Over the past decade, he was also a finalist for four large ensemble concerto competitions hosted by the universities he attended.
While completing his undergraduate at the University of Northern Colorado, Copland was a trombonist in the Downbeat Award-winning UNC Jazz Lab I big band from 2014 to 2018. While in Lab I, he had the honor of joining the band in a five-city performance tour of China. He can also be heard on the album The Romeo and Juliet Project as well as recordings by the Cassio Vianna and Chang Su jazz orchestras. Copland was a member and officer of the Alpha Theta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity.
During his graduate studies at the University of Arizona, Copland has performed as a member of the Fred Fox Graduate Brass Quintet, Studio Jazz Ensemble, Arizona Symphony Orchestra, and the U of A Trombone Choir. He also served as the trombone studio teaching assistant, where he was given the opportunity to teach private lessons to undergraduate students, lead studio seminars, coach chamber ensembles, and assist with brass methods courses.
Copland’s primary teachers have included Michael Becker, Keven Stewart, Nat Wickham, John Sipher, JoDee Davis, and Jason Carder.
Copland Harris Rose currently performs on Bach Artisan Stradivarius, Rath R4F, Edwards-Getzen (alto), and King 2B Liberty trombones.
